be salt and light. (Mt.5, 13-16)
Salt and light: two well-known symbols of the human cultural tradition at the time of Jesus and, to some extent, even in our times. Some details of this double image, which could be checked into the reality of daily life in the village of Nazareth where Jesus had lived for more than thirty years. How many times Mary, the mother of Jesus, has made the gesture of throwing away any 'piece of salt' because he had lost the effectiveness of giving flavor to food! So you can imagine how careful to provide himself on and placed in the middle of the room, the oil lamp, to make visible the people at home and those who entered! "You are the salt of the earth ..." Jesus says this of his disciples to tell them 'having to be' that could be less, "... But if the salt loses its flavor ..." And to entice them to never lose the awareness of reality to which they must continually strive. 'To be the salt' means to give flavor to their lives through an experience of meaning: the generosity and service, sharing, justice, forgiveness, prayer and peace are the ingredients that allow us to enjoy the taste of God "You are the light of the world ..." Jesus says this of his disciples to tell them 'having to be' that could be less: "... dark a lamp and put it under the table ... "And to entice them to never lose the awareness of reality to which they must continually strive. 'Be light' means first of all realize that the way in which his own life is not something neutral or even just private: our life is shown and is seen, therefore, we give an example that can be positive or negative. We are salt and light up only when we know to be fellow travelers of all those we meet, only if those we meet and know us, through us, can enjoy the taste of God to go forward in its path. We are salt and light if only we know to be discreet companions and witnesses without delusions of leadership. Why if the salt gives taste and flavor when mixed with other ingredients, when something completely covers the drain and dry out, if the light from the lamp that projects into the darkness knows the way ahead, eyes fixed blinds. Lord Jesus, 'that those we meet can enjoy yourself, do' than to those who ask the way we can show the way that leads to you. Give us the humility of service and the joy of giving.
